 Entry Points

  • Entry Point 1 is for the learner with either no, or minimal, previous aeronautical experience
  • Entry Point 2 is for the learner with a current CASA Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL)
  • Entry Point 3 is for the learner with a current CASA Private Pilot Licence (PPL)

Practical Flight Training (Entry Point 1 - please contact us for the hours relating to Entry Points 2 or 3)

  • Aeroplane - 170 hours
  • Simulator - 4 hours
  • Flight Briefing - 26 hours
  • Classroom and aeroplane based face to face

Aeronautical Knowledge Training (Entry Point 1 - please contact us for the hours relating to Entry Points 2 or 3)

  • Conducted at TAFE NSW Ultimo Campus, NSW, Australia (RTO ID 90003)
  • 14 weeks of 5 days theory at TAFE NSW
  • It is anticipated the trainee will invest an equivalent amount of hours of self study to satisfactory complete the Aeronautical Knowledge Training Examinations and the Units of Competency Assessment Tools for this course


  • Upon successful completion of this course the trainee will be awarded a AVI50215 Diploma of Aviation (Commercial Pilot Licence - Aeroplane) by TAFE NSW (RTO ID 90003)


Upon successful completion of CASA assessments the trainee will be awarded the following CASA Licence(s)

  • Commercial Pilot Licence 

Integrated Timetable

  • Full time integrated training
  • Twelve (12) months (Entry Point 1 - Please contact us for the hours relating to Entry Points 2 or 3)
  • Minimum 20 contact hours per week

Flight Training Requirements

It is recommended that applicants have completed, or obtained, the below prior to enrolment:

What is included

  • Practical flight training (dual and solo) (aeroplane and simulator), fuel, pre and post flight briefings, aeronautical knowledge training, course notes and briefing notes
  • Practical flight training is conducted in four seat single-engine aeroplanes at Sydney Flight College
  • Landing fees
  • Sydney Flight College training fleet provides aeronautical experience in aeroplanes that have the latest 'glass' panels as well as traditional flight instrument panels
  • Simulator practical flight training is conducted in a full motion synthetic training device
  • Whilst aeronautical knowledge training at TAFE NSW Ultimo Campus is conducted on a fixed timetable, practical flight training conducted at Bankstown Airport is scheduled with a degree of flexibility to maximise student flying opportunities

What is not included

  • CASA Practical Flight Standards Testing Fee
  • Assessment Services Limited (ASL) Aeronautical Knowledge Training Testing Fees
  • CASA Licence Fee
  • Examination and CASA fees (approximately $2,000)
  • Uniforms, headsets, text books, maps, charts and CASA documents

Before Enrolling

  • Contact Sydney Flight College on 02 9709 8488 to discuss the enrolment process
  • Obtain an Aviation Reference Number (ARN)
  • Obtain a Class One Medical Examination
  • Apply for an Aviation Security Identity Card (ASIC)
  • Hold 5 hours aeronautical experience (dual) or complete a Sydney Flight College Flight Experience Package (Entry Point 1 only)


  • Practical flight training hours quoted are realistic minimum requirements achievable for the average trainee pilot
  • If the trainee is not yet competent at the completion of this course additional training will be required at the trainee's expense, in line with the TAFE NSW reassessment policy
  • Course Rate Aviation gasoline (AVGAS) has been quoted at the average NSW bowser price
  • Should the price of AVGAS exceed the Bankstown boswer rate of AUD$2.25 per litre including GST (the Course Rate), the trainee agrees to be invoiced for the difference between the New Bowser Rate and the Course Rate.


All prices are tentative until confirmed closer to start date:

Entry Point 1:  Course cost $86,900 of which $76,125 is available under the VET Student Loan Scheme to eligible applicants.

Entry Point 2:  Course cost $73,500 of which $73,500 is available under the VET Student Loan Scheme to eligible applicants.

Entry Point 3:  Course cost $65,000 of which $65,000 is available under the VET Student Loan Scheme to eligible applicants.
