Course Overview

This course is designed to qualify you for

Practical Flight Training

  • Aeroplane - 170 hours
  • Simulator - 4 hours
  • Flight Briefing - 40 hours
  • Classroom and aeroplane based face to face

Aeronautical Knowledge Training

  • Conducted at TAFE NSW Ultimo Campus, NSW, Australia (RTO ID 90003)
  • 14 weeks of 5 days theory at TAFE NSW (507 hours total)
  • It is anticipated the trainee will invest an equivalent amount of hours of self study to satisfactory complete the Aeronautical Knowledge Training Examinations and the Units of Competency Assessment Tools for this course


  • Upon successful completion of this course the trainee will be awarded a AVI50215 Diploma of Aviation (Commercial Pilot Licence - Aeroplane) from TAFE NSW Ultimo Campus


Upon successful completion of this course the trainee will be awarded the following CASA Licence(s)

  • Commercial Pilot Licence

  • Full time integrated training
  • Twelve (12) months
  • Minimum 20 contact hours per week

Entry Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate evidence of the following

  • Attendance at screening interview 1
  • 5 hours aeronautical experience or completion of an approved Flight Experience Package
  • Aviation Reference Number
  • Aviation Security Identity Card
  • Class 1 Medical
  • Completion of an online assessment
  • Attendance at screening interview 2

What is included

  • Practical flight training (dual and solo) (aeroplane and simulator), fuel, pre and post flight briefings, aeronautical knowledge training, course notes and briefing notes
  • Practical flight training is conducted in four seat single-engine aeroplanes at Sydney Flight College
  • Landing fees
  • Sydney Flight College training fleet provides aeronatical experience in aeroplanes that have the latest 'glass' panels as well as traditional flight instrument panels
  • Simulator practical flight training is conducted in a full motion synthetic training device
  • Whilst aeronautical knowledge training at Sydney TAFE Ultimo Campus is conducetd on a fixed timetable, practical flight training conducetd at Bankstown Airport is scheduled with a degree of flexibility to maximise student flying opportunities

  • Assessment Services Limited (ASL) Aeronautical Knowledge Training Testing Fees
  • CASA Licence Fee
  • Examination and CASA fees approximately $2000

Before Enrolling

  • Contact Sydney Flight College for a screening interview
  • Obtain an Aviation Reference Number (ARN)
  • Obtain a Class One Medical Examination
  • Apply for an Aviation Security Identity Card (ASIC)
  • Hold 5 hours aeronautical experience (dual) or complete a Sydney Flight College Flight Experience Package


  • Practical flight training hours quoted are realistic minimum requirements achievable for the average trainee pilot
  • If the trainee is not yet competent at the completion of this course additional training will be required at the trainee's expense
  • Course Rate Aviation gasoline (AVGAS) has been quoted at the average NSW bowser price
  • Should the price of AVGAS exceed the Bankstown boswer rate of AUD$2.25 per litre including GST (the Course Rate), the trainee agrees to be invoiced for the difference between the New Bowser Rate and the Course Rate.


  • Course cost $85,000 of which $75,000 is available under the VET Student Loan Scheme to eligible applicants.  Students considering the VSL scheme should view the terms & conditions of such loans at

Entry requirements and additional course materials costs apply (e.g. textbooks, uniform, headset etc.) which are the responsibility of, and will be retained by, the student. A full list of required materials will be provided prior to enrolment. This qualification is issued by TAFE NSW; Registered Training Organisation 90003.
