It’s a huge day for SFC as we announce a very exciting ambassadorship with Matt Hall Racing!
Matt Hall is a third generation pilot, a former RAAF Fighter Combat (Top Gun) Instructor, international unlimited aerobatic competitor and in 2009 became not only the first Australian to ever compete in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship, but also the first rookie to finish a race – and indeed the entire season – on the podium.
Matt has a long history in the air beginning flying with his dad from an early age, making his first solo flight at age 15 in a glider, before gaining his aircraft pilot’s licence at the age of 18. Following in the footsteps of his grandfather who flew in World War II, Matt is a former Royal Australian Air Force Fighter Pilot, with over 1,800 Hornet hours. He was an elite Fighter Combat (Top Gun) Instructor, and in 2006 completed a tour as the chief instructor for this demanding course. He has received many awards along the way, including Dux of Pilot, Hornet and Fighter Combat Instructor courses, the 1997 Fighter Pilot of the Year and was awarded a Chief of Air Force commendation for his performance as the Chief Instructor of the 2006 FCI course. He spent three years in the USA on a USAF exchange program, flying over 500 hours in the F-15E Strike Eagle, including combat. For his efforts, he was awarded combat decorations by both the US and Australia.
After leaving the military, Matt became Australia’s only Red Bull Air Race pilot. In 2009, his debut season in the World Championship, Matt became the first rookie ever to stand on a race podium and also the first to claim an overall podium (third). In 2015, he earned his first two race wins and was second in the World Championship, missing the title by just five points. In 2016 Matt clinched his second-place spot on the overall podium, even before the season finale. After coming within three-tenths of a second of clinching the crown in 2018, Matt is pushing harder than ever to remain among the top contenders and close the gap to break through for a maiden title.
Now licensed in gliders, ultralights, hang gliders, powered aircraft, helicopters and military jets, Matt has over 5,500 hours in various aircraft types. He is passionate about general aviation and light aircraft, having owned nine aircraft himself. It is this passion for general aviation which makes him ideal for his new role with Sydney Flight College/Sydney Flying Club.
As part of his ambassadorship, Matt will work with SFC to promote careers as a pilot, and the opportunities which such careers can offer. He will add value to our club members through his knowledge of aviation risk management, and attend and promote events such as the SFC Open Day, held every November. It’s a perfect fit for an organisation which has had a passion for flying for the last 50 years. Welcome Matt, we can’t wait to work with you!
