Sydney Flight College (SFC) Pilot Academy Tamworth has announced the addition of the ALSIM Airliner Simulator to its training fleet, marking a major step forward in the organisation’s ability to deliver airline-focused pilot training in Australia.
The ALSIM Airliner is a next-generation training device designed to replicate the operational environment of modern commercial aircraft. The simulator is engineered to support advanced training programs including Multi-Crew Cooperation (MCC), Airline Pilot Standard MCC (APS MCC), jet orientation courses, airline selection preparation, and Crew Resource Management (CRM).
With increased costs of flight training, industry is moving towards competency-based methods. This means increased training in immersive synthetic trainers to refine and master specific skills prior to exacting in real aircraft. This reduces costs and by shifting training outside the aircraft, improves environmental credentials.
The simulator incorporates ALSIM’s high-fidelity flight modelling and immersive visual system, creating a realistic and fully integrated training environment for both pilots and instructors.
An advanced Instructor Operating Station (IOS) enables instructors to design complex real-world training scenarios including abnormal procedures, aircraft system failures, adverse weather conditions and operational decision-making exercises. This allows training organisations to replicate real airline environments while maintaining a safe and controlled learning setting.
By integrating airline-style simulation into its training ecosystem, SFC aims to strengthen the transition from general aviation training into airline operations. Students will develop both the technical and behavioural competencies required to operate effectively in highly automated commercial flight decks.
A defining feature of the ALSIM Airliner Simulator is its hybrid cockpit. The simulator can be configured to represent both conventional aircraft control systems and fly-by-wire technology, allowing students to experience the operational philosophies used by major aircraft manufacturers within a single training platform.
With only minor changes, the simulator can transition between the two cockpit concepts. The cockpit layout closely reflects that of widely used single-aisle airliners such as the Airbus A320 family and Boeing 737 series. This enables trainees to build familiarity with airline procedures, automation management and flight deck workflows before progressing to a specific aircraft type rating.
SFC Pilot Academy Tamworth will primarily use the simulator for MCC training, which represents the final stage of professional pilot training at SFC. During this phase, students transition from single-pilot general aviation operations into a multi-crew airline-style environment where communication, teamwork and decision-making become central to safe flight operations. This final piece of training enables SFC Academy students complete their training package – adding the MCC training to their Commercial Pilot Licence, Multi-Engine and Instrument Ratings, along with the Upset Prevention Recovery Training qualification in twelve months.
SFC President Steven Kastanias, (on behalf of the Board) reiterated that this significant investment reflects the increased profile of SFC as a leading Australian flight training provider. It evidences SFC’s commitment to regional NSW. “We continue to lead the way in flight training methods and are making real impacts in producing the next generation of aviators”.
SFC CEO Joseph Pilo said the introduction of the simulator represents a significant milestone for the organisation and its students.
“The introduction of the ALSIM Airliner Simulator is a major milestone for SFC,” said Joseph Pilo, Chief Executive Officer of SFC.
“Modern airlines expect graduates to arrive with a strong understanding of multi-crew environments, automation management and airline-style procedures. This simulator allows us to deliver that experience earlier in a pilot’s training journey.”
The addition of the ALSIM Airliner Simulator places SFC among a growing number of global training organisations adopting advanced simulation technology designed specifically for airline preparation training.
As the aviation industry continues to address increasing global pilot demand, training providers are placing greater emphasis on competency-based training and realistic operational preparation.
“Simulation is becoming increasingly critical in aviation training,” Joseph Pilo added.
“By investing in advanced airline-style simulators, we’re ensuring our students develop the decision-making, leadership, communication and threat-and-error management skills required in today’s highly automated flight decks and be one of the most competitive candidates for future employment.”
Through continued investment in modern training technology and airline-aligned training methodologies, SFC aims to equip the next generation of pilots with the skills, knowledge and operational mindset required to succeed in the global aviation industry.
The organisation says the addition of the ALSIM Airliner Simulator is part of its broader plans for future development.
