Exciting aviation training opportunity coming to the Riverina region
Sydney Flight College plans Temora expansion
Can you see yourself having a career as a pilot? Are you interested to know more?
Sydney Flight College (SFC) has a 50 year history or training pilots. Starting life as Schofields Flying Club back in 1969, SFC has grown into one of Australia’s largest flight colleges, and the largest member’s only flying club. It’s our passion for flying which keeps us going from strength to strength.
SFC currently conducts flight training towards the AVI50215 Diploma of Aviation (Commercial Pilot Licence – Aeroplane) and AVI50415 Diploma of Aviation (Instrument Rating) courses at Bankstown Airport (Sydney). However, proximity to the ocean means that flight training in the Sydney basin is often slowed by inclement weather.
A move to Temora would increase the number of ‘flyable’ days from approximately 65% to 95%, allowing expedited completion of the CASA Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) and Instrument Rating (IR).
Location of Temora, NSW
Flight training in Temora offers fantastic possibilities. Sunny days, clear skies and uncongested airspace will all contribute to a wonderful training experience.
Although in the planning stage, it is expected that a CASA CPL could be completed in 9 months in Temora (vs. 12-13 months in Sydney). Further, an ab-inito (no prior experience) CPL plus Instrument Rating could be achieved in around 12 months.
SFC plans to house students and instructors on site at Temora airfield, further speeding-up delivery as students ‘live and breathe’ aviation with no distractions or commuting time.

Such economies are likely to lead to more competitive pricing. SFC modelling demonstrates that courses could be delivered by such a reduced price (compared to Sydney) that the difference would be greater than accommodation costs in Temora for the duration of study. For students who have to pay to live in Sydney, this would lead to cost savings. There’s lots of work still to do and nothing is set in stone, but we are excited that the numbers are looking appealing.
The target date for delivery of the first CPL course is July 2020, subject to regulatory approval.
